DIGITAL CONTENT & WEBSITE PRODUCER JOB POSTING
One-Year Contract | Calgary-based | Salary Range: $60-$70,000 per year
VinylCentric is looking for someone to become the day-to-day caretaker—and one of the creative voices—of our online presence.
Once upon a time, this person might simply have been called a webmaster. Today, the job touches a little of everything: maintaining websites, publishing stories, creating graphics, answering questions, developing new ideas and occasionally picking up a phone to shoot a photograph or video.
We are looking for someone who is genuinely comfortable working in WordPress and who enjoys making information clear, attractive and interesting online. You might post a new article, prepare and resize the images that accompany it, update an existing section of the website, answer an email from a visitor, or help us think through an entirely new feature.
You would also help maintain and develop VinylCentric’s extensive online collection of Canadian records and recording history. Some of that work will involve adding and organizing content, improving how visitors experience the collection, and collaborating with our technical staff as the site continues to grow.
Over time, the position could include helping us develop a blog, podcast, short-form videos, interviews, social media content and other ideas we haven’t thought of yet.
We are not searching for someone whose résumé mechanically checks every possible box. We would rather find someone who is bright, curious, engaged and able to learn. You do not need a computer science degree, and you do not need to be an experienced programmer. Our more complicated PHP, MySQL and server work will be handled separately, although some familiarity with HTML and CSS would certainly be useful.
You may be a recent graduate, largely self-taught, changing careers, or someone who has already been doing this kind of work under a completely different job title. What matters most is that you can show us things you have created or maintained and talk intelligently about how you approached them.
You may be a particularly good fit if you:
- Know your way around WordPress and are comfortable publishing and organizing content
- Have a good eye for clear, appealing web pages
- Can create or adapt straightforward graphics using Photoshop, Canva or similar tools
- Write clearly and can respond thoughtfully to incoming messages
- Are comfortable taking photographs or shooting simple video with an iPhone
- Enjoy figuring things out and learning unfamiliar tools
- Can take ownership of projects while still collaborating with a small team
An interest in records, music or Canadian cultural history would be wonderful, but it is not required. Curiosity matters more than already knowing everything.
This is a Calgary-based position, and applicants must already live in Calgary or the surrounding area and be able to work with us in person. Because VinylCentric is part of a charitable organization, our budget is not that of a large technology company; compensation will be approximately $60-70,000 per year.
If this sounds like something you would enjoy, please send us a short introduction, a résumé, and examples of websites, graphics, writing, videos or other projects you have worked on. These do not have to come from formal employment. School projects, personal sites, volunteer work and independent projects are all welcome.
