Custom

Custom Records was founded in 1959 by the American entrepreneur and producer, Bob Shad. Initially based in New York City, the label focused on jazz and rhythm and blues, capturing the vibrant sounds of the era. In the 1960s, Custom expanded its roster to include rock and pop artists, reflecting the shifting musical landscape of the time. Notable artists associated with Custom include the influential jazz saxophonist Archie Shepp and the rock band The Shadows of Knight. The label was also known for its innovative recording techniques, which contributed to the distinct sound of its releases. Throughout the 1970s, Custom continued to diversify its catalog, venturing into genres like soul and funk. Although it eventually faded from prominence, Custom Records left a lasting impact on the music industry, particularly in the realms of jazz and R&B, and is remembered for its contributions to the development of independent record labels.
